David, a former New York Times journalist, and his weird new neighbor strike a girl on her bike. David, drunk and bewildered, allows Robert convince him to leave the girl for dead to safeguard his job. Robert undertakes unspeakable things to protect the secret in the name of friendship. As the police hunt for the hit-and-run killer, David's newspaper sends him to cover the incident, where he meets the victim's sister Vanessa.
