Son of Lord Clancharlie, gwynplaine, features a permanent smile carved on his head by the King, in revenge for Gwynplaine's father's treachery. Way of a travelling show man adopts gwynplaine and becomes a popular idol. He falls deeply in love. The king dies, along with also his jester attempts to corrupt or kill Gwynplaine.
