The narrative of Michael Berg, a German lawyer that, like a teen in the late 1950s, had an affair with an older woman, Hanna, that then disappeared and then resurface years after one of those defendants at a war crimes trial originating from her activities being a concentration camp guard late in the war. He realizes that Hanna may be concealing that fact and is illiterate.
