The cartoon had its beginnings using just two five-part mini series from 1984 and 1983, afterward became a normal show that ran in syndication from 1985 to 1986. Ron Friedman established the G.I. Joe animated series for television, and wrote all of four mini series. Because of production difficulties premiered as a television mini series, although the has been intended to be considered a feature film.
