Based on the depressionera bildungsroman memoir of writer A. E. Hotchner, the movie follows the story of a boy struggling to live on his own at a hotel in St. Louis after his mommy is focused on a sanatorium with tuberculosis. His dad, traveling sales man and a German immigrant is off on long trips from which the boy cannot make sure he'll return.
