Note: They had to film the scene with Mahalia Jackson in two takes because everyone was crying so hard the first few takes. Once without the actors & her alone. Even camera men were crying. She always sung gospel, she was a bit reluctant to do it. Ms Jackson put the icing on cake

Note: Sarah Jane played by Susan Kohner was Mexican/Irish. In the original (1934) the role was played by a black actress Freddie Washington that could pass. But because she would not, her roles in hollywood were limited.

I watched this movie years ago , I got something different from it. I just couldn't believe the daughter was so selfish towards her mom, who loved her so much. now the daughter realized what she had & what she lost Annie would be happy to see her daughter accept herself .

Oh, wow! This was a touching movie. Fully enjoyed it from start to end. Didn't want to it to end. I'm glad I watched this. Highly recommended 10/10

Queen 4 Life

I can't ever watch this movie and not be in tears in the end. That's a true mother's love for her child and I'm a Sistar so the ending was truly beautiful something I would want at my own.

Emma Crawford

This is one of the greatest of all time

Mahalia Jackson was amazing! The ending to this film is stunningly sad. The entire plight of Sarah Jane is the direct result of the self hatred systemic racism has caused! 😒

Love this movie immensely...'Sarah Jane' thought she was "special" and got her wake-up call though..."Is it true?" 🤔😳🎭😱😂😂😂

This movie was good.....I guess for in the time it was made. Those 1st 10 mins of dialogue on my ears were hard....did I hear the sista say "Let me take care of ya..... I'll work for FREE?👀👀👀. Skip too 2024 and listen too a black woman ever so eager. [
