Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin, both down on his luck in Tampico, Mexico in 1925, meet up with a grizzled prospector called Howard and then opt to join together with him searching for gold in the wilds of central Mexico. Through difficulties, they eventually triumph in finding gold but especially, the elements, and bandits greed threaten to show their success to disaster.
